五 戒
The Five Precepts

一、不杀生—禁止杀害任何生命，并且应该对他们慈悲。
1. Not killing (taking of Life) - Not only shouldn’t we kill any living beings, but we should also be compassionate to them.

二、不偷盗—尊重他人的权利。
2. Not stealing (taking which is not given) - It is, so to speak, to respect and not to infringe upon the rights of other people.

三、不邪淫—了解正当的性关系，并且知所节制。
3. Not committing sexual misconduct - Understand and respect the proper sexual relate-ness conduct, and do it in moderation.

四、不妄语—说实话，不说欺诳他人之语。
4. Not lying (stating something which is untrue - Tell the truth rather than deceitful words.

五、不饮酒—戒酒，而且还有杜绝麻醉品以及毒品。
5. Not to take intoxicants.- Stay away from alcoholic drinks, drugs and any sort of intoxicants.

十善
The Ten Virtuous Deeds

一、不杀生—即是止善，止前杀生之恶行，善者当行放生之善也。
1. Not Killing contains two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—cease previous wrongdoing of killing and practice the virtue of letting free.

二、不偷盗—即是止善，止前盗他财物之恶行，善者当行布施之善。
2. Not stealing also contains two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—cease previous wrongdoing of taking away other people’s property and practice the virtue of generosity (giving).

三、不邪淫—即是止善，止前于非妻妾淫欲之恶行，善者当行恭敬之善。
3. Not committing sexual misconduct. There are two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—cease previous wrongdoing of adultery and practice being courteous and respectful.

四、不妄语—即是止善，止前虚言诳他之恶行，善者当行实语之善也。
4. Not lying (stating something which is not untrue). There are two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—renounce the old way of being dishonest and say truthful words instead.

五、不两舌—即是止善，止前构斗两边之恶行，善者当行和合之善。
5. Avoid divisive talk (instigation, speech which cause division between friends, relatives etc.). There are two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—refrain from telling tales that incite divisions, and learn to be responsible in consolidating harmony and integration.

六、不恶口—即是止善，止前恶言加人之恶行，善者当行软语之善。
6. Avoid harsh speech. There are two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—discard abusive language and say kind, soft and loving words.

七、不绮语—即是止善，止前绮侧乖理之恶语行，善者当行有义语饶益之善。
7. Avoid idle gossips (frivolous chatter). There are two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—abandon fancy word games and perverse language and say words that are meaningful and beneficial.

八、不贪欲—即是止善，止前引取无厌之恶行，善者当行不净观，观诸六尘皆欺诳不净之观行善。
8. Avoid covetousness - There are two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—cease being greedy and practice the Meditation on Impurity, contemplating the delusive and impure nature of the Six Dusts.

九、不嗔恚—即是止善，止前忿怒之恶行，善者当行慈忍之善。
9. Avoid Ill will (being resentful). There are two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—curb the ill temper and learn to be loving, compassionate and tolerant.

十、不邪见—即是止善，止前拨正因果僻信邪心之恶行，善者当行正信归心正道生智慧之善心。
10. Abandon wrong views. There are two layers of meaning: the passive cessation and the active virtuous act—abandon the deviated and perverse denial of the existence of Karma, and adhere to the right path with the proper belief, from which wisdom arises.
