The True Meaning of Life
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1. Learn to meditate upon life and death—you might feel anxious and fearful at the beginning, but once you overcome your fear, this practice will only make your life brighter and richer.

2. Remind yourself that death shall come at any moment, a good way to spur yourself not to let every day of your life slip by emptily.

3. While you see the sunset as a beautiful scene, I only view it as a time signal that reminds me I’m moving another step closer to death, reminding me to make good use of the remaining lifetime.

4. Death is not horrible. In fact, birth is always accompanied by death—at the moment we were born, we are inching toward death every minute. Between birth and death, if we are just fooling around and doing nothing – that’s most pitiful and fearful scandal in life!

5. Death itself is neither good nor bad—it’s only a natural process of change. To a person who doesn’t waste his life, death is nothing to be afraid of.

6. The horror of death originates from your obsession with life.

7. Nothing could have hurt a person any more in his lifetime who is able to face death at any time without fear and regret.

8. Instead of complaining about the unreachable goal of immortality, you may as well live at your best and enjoy the ride!

9. All things are ever-changing. If you have your life and happiness count on the immortality and permanence of things, you are sure to meet with despair in every day’s life.

10. All things go with the law of interdependent arising—they emerge, stay and then vanish finally. Cry and yell as you may, they go on changing and vanishing as usual, which is but a natural order and has nothing to do with good or bad. Once you understand it and accept it, you will then live a happier life.

11. To be happy is in fact easy. When things are going smooth, keep in mind that fortune and happiness won’t last forever; when things go against our wish, view the adversity as the flowing clouds. Don’t take these experiences seriously because suffering and happiness just are impermanent, they go and come unexpectedly. With such realization, you can be a carefree bystander, undisturbed by the churning and capricious worldly affairs.
