Listening to the Teachings of the Wise (I)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1. The Right view means a true understanding of the law of causality and a perception of the unstable, fickle, and impermanent nature of the phenomenal world.

2. Spiritual practitioners should shun the two extremes of indulgence and meaningless asceticism.

3. All sentient beings have the ability to realize and actualize the Dharma, a completely pure state of being.

4. Just practice and master a few basic principles, instead of going for extensive learning- is the key to the access to the ultimate Dharma.

5. Avoid the wrong and the evil as best as we can, and try our very best to do and be good

6. If spiritual practice is not your first priority, then you’ll never have the time for it.

7. The so-called “precepts” mean the purification of our bodily and verbal actions, which is the first step in Buddhist practicing.

8. Not being indolent is the essence of spiritual practice.

9. Clear Awareness is crucial in our Dharma practice; try to have it if you can!

10. If we examine Buddha Sakyamuni’s life, we will learn that he never cut corners. He strived hard and succeeded but it’s still a long way to go for us….

11. Buddha’s words are called “Kind Advice” because they are virtuous, authentic, meaningful, and can lead us to the Absolute Reality.

12. Kind Advice simply means the wisdom words of the Buddha, with the motivation to help all living beings in reducing their affliction and suffering – it has nothing to do with status or positions.

13. Kind Advice do not compromise, it would not ingratiate itself to suit others.

14. If we wish that all our wishes would come true, it’s akin to wring water from a stone.

15. The purpose of listening to the Dharma is to allow our Mind to actualize and attain it, do not just to keep it in mind, or merely gaining some extra knowledge.

16. Don’t let what you have learned active only in your head or on your tongue; let it function properly through your of body, speech, and mind.

17. Do not find Truth within the words. Words and language are merely pointers, from which we will know and understand the Truth if we follow the paths revealed accordingly

18. Enhance your mental strength, then the threats of your hardships and problems will be weakened.

19. Having your nose led by Impermanence, you are then the follower of Strong Desire - not an authentic Buddhist!

20. Take on difficulties with persistence and patience.

Listening to the Teachings of the Wise (II)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1. Every phenomenon is primordially natural, without any need to add or delete anything. We complicate things by trying too hard to modify or interfere its natural-ness.

2. Buddha asks us to have our thoughts abide peacefully in our body, feelings, mind and the Dharma, observing things like they are without any fabrication or mental projections.

3. Selfishness and all sorts of troubles ensued from the dualistic concepts of “Subject” (the I) and “objects” (projected phenomena).

4. Buddha advised us to turn inwardly, to find the truth of the Dharma within this fleshly body, there’s no need to change or destroy anything.

5. The mind and the body are but composite phenomena; they are impermanent, hence without substantial Self and not ours.

6. Those who perceive clearly the process of formation are blessed with serenity and peacefulness, because they’ve realized that the body and the mind are inherently empty of Self - they are merely fleeting and ever-changing phenomena.

7. The transitory and fleeting nature of all phenomena is called “formation.”

8. All merits and virtues originate from realizing the Dharma, from which Nirvana dwells.

9. While you listen to the Dharma, mere hearing is not as good as keeping the teachings in mind and then put them into practice.

10. Although covetousness and attachment are still evident in the process of cultivation, we only need to be aware of them.

11. We target our study and cultivation on realizing the Dharma, at the moment of which our suffering will cease.

12. Buddha taught us that after we have learned, we need to move on instead of staying where we were with those ignorant ones.

13. without asking, good karma will spontaneously arise when you realize and attain the Dharma.

14. To realize and attain the Dharma is the sole aim of every spiritual practice

15. After you have realized the Dharma, the remaining imprint of resentment erupts only occasionally, and its energy was weaken tremendously.

16. Instead of adjusting the Dharma to suit you, just fine- tune yourself according to the Dharma.

17. Buddha said that whichever method one practices—giving, upholding the precepts, meditation, or compassion—achieving the state of nirvana is the only goal.

Listening to the Teachings of the Wise (III)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1. We gain joy and improve our skillful means through Listening, and then we benefit others and ourselves by means of the Proper Thought.

2. Is a huge stone heavy? It’s so light when we walk over it, but if we try to lift it, it’s quite another thing.

3. With a mind that is well-grounded, we are able to progress on a correct path which will step by step lead us to Nirvana.

4. Uneasiness results from the wrong view, luring you into wondering thoughts.

5. When we realize the true nature of the all phenomena, we drop our attachments and we will have Peace within our mind. We have no more grasping.

6. We do not accumulate merits and virtues to transform a cat into a dog.

7. Both the skillful means or expedient methods we mentioned about are beyond the reach of the worldly intelligence; it is attained through the unification of two accumulation – the non-dual Merit and Wisdom.

8. Wisdom is like the flash of lightning, and Desire the river.

9. Live in the world while not being defiled by its dust; keep your awareness, free your mind from being inundated by the river of Desire.

10. At the moment we heard the teaching that nothing is truly ours, we begin to suffer for fear of loss.

11. Everything keeps appearing and disappearing, vanishing and arising—Interdependent Origination is the essence of this process.

12. Contemplate on the emptiness and non-substantiality of this mundane world, and Death shall not keep track of you because you are invisible!

13. Dharma is in everything—the form we see, the sound we hear—they are all Dharma. Dharma is none other than the existence of various causes and conditions.

14. It is the mind that perceives the Dharma, and the one who is able to perceive the Dharma is called the Buddha – the Awakened One. Buddha teaches Dharma because he has attained the Truth. Dharma, however, will continue to remain even after Buddha’s Parinirvana.

15. Buddha said, “Ananda, if you practice well and equip yourself skillfully, you will certainly be able to reach the stage of attainment through the Buddha’s teachings. To see the Dharma is to see me; to see me is to see the Dharma.”

16. We should always uphold the Five Precepts - because they are the pre-requisites of a human life with endowments.

Listening to the Teachings of the Wise (IV)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1. Anyone who has mindfulness and Correct View is eligible to be a practitioner.

2. Mindfulness of Death begins with the observation of our breath, following the meditation on impermanence.

3. Put you focus on your breath, maintain your mindfulness, then let your wisdom rise naturally!

4. Meditation is a good remedy for suffering. Through it we are able to discern right from wrong, but without practice, we can’t perceive our reality as it is.

5. Our wish that everything remains unchanged and everlasting is but an illusion, it results from our failure to realize the laws of nature.

6. At the end pf our lives, every one of us will have to let go totally! We are unable to take even a pinch away from the world, be it name, fame, profit, benefits, or any painful or joyful sensations.

7. Don’t look for the Dharma somewhere out there; you are going to miss it if you look too far away.

8. Good deeds bring in auspiciousness, and evil deeds suffering. Good conduct will make one’s life better, while misconduct uglier.

9. We need to realize the Truth after listening to the Dharma— great enlightenment brings great attainment, while the minor ones little attainments.

10. With little Correct Views, we suffer a lot. But when we equip ourselves with sufficient Correct Views, then our suffering will cease. Peace is then the ultimate result.

11. Buddha wants us to perceive the reality of birth, old-age, illness and death; and to contemplate the reality as it truly is – this is Dharma. By being able to contemplate truthfully, we can then say that we are practicing the Dharma.

12. Buddha advice us to ponder upon the meaning of precepts and the Dharma, knowing that “other people are just like us and we are like them, too.” With such realization, mutual understanding and empathy will come along; for we will realize that everyone one of us is subject to the process of birth, old-age, illness and death.

13. With powerful Insights, Dharma is with us—the more we perceive our true nature, the lesser our attachment and desire will be.

14. Train yourself like this every day: when going to bed, remember to focus on your inhalation and exhalation, thinking, “How nice, I am still able to breathe tonight!”

15. We develop the causes of liberation by diligent practices. Buddha wants us to contemplate upon birth, old-age, illness and death - from which the causes of liberation derived.
